Britney Spears has filed a request in court to have them remove her father as her legal conservator.
The singer has been in a 12-year-long conservatorship – the legal matter that prevents her from being in charge of her own finances, as a result of her physical and mental state – since 2008.
It all started when the 38-year-old had a very public meltdown in the late 2000s which saw her infamously shave her head. Shortly after, she checked into rehab, several times, as well as a psychiatric hospital.
Now, with her father Jamie Spears’ role to end on 22 August, the court will reassess the situation.
The Toxic singer is “strongly opposed” to her father remaining conservator, court documents filed to the Superior Court of California reads, via BBC.
Britney said the conservatorship “rescued her from a collapse, exploitation by predatory individuals and financial ruin” and has allowed her to “regain her position as a world-class entertainer”. But she would like her manager, Jodi Montgomery, to take over her father’s role.
He’s been fulfilling the position in her father’s absence in recent months.
