An Indian doctor kidnapped by the Islamic State (IS) in Libya was released and will soon return to the country, announced today Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Dr. Ramamurthy Kosanam has been rescued and will soon return home, tweeted the minister, who stressed that the doctor was injured by a gunshot.

Ramamurthy was working in a hospital in the Libyan city of Sirte when he was kidnapped by IS on September 8, 2015, along with another group of doctors.

In September of last year, Indian teachers T. Gopalakrishna and C. Balaram Kisha, kidnapped by IS in 2015, were also released in Libya.

In March an Indian nurse and her son were killed in Sabratha town, about 60 kilometers from Tripoli, when her house was hit by a mortar shell.

The authorities in New Delhi estimate at 1,800 the number of nationals still living in that nation, which is immersed in a civil war since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s government in 2011.
