South Africa: I will never be used by the ANC or Presidency – Mkhwebane

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane says she will never allow herself to be used by either the ANC or the Presidency.

She was responding to allegations made by her predecessor, Thuli Madonsela on the weekend, that she might be colluding with the Presidency to deduct almost R 500 000 from her pension payout.

Mkhwebane says this is an operational matter which has nothing to do with her but is handled by an accounting officer in the Public Protector’s office.

Mkhwebane says it is not true that she is hostile towards her predecessor and that she snubbed the handover meeting.

Mkhwebane says she arrived at Madonsela’s office at the agreed time only to be told to wait as Madonsela was busy with the ‘State of Capture’ report and met her only for an hour.

The handover was a single e-mail detailing cases she needed to follow up on.

She nonetheless does not think dwelling on the issue will be of any help to anyone.
