Members of the Makonde community have performed in the ongoing Madaraka Day celebrations in Machakos.

The Makonde broke the record last week when they trekked all the way from Kwale to State House Nairobi to demand for recognition.

Members of the community that originally came from Mozambique have lived in Kenya without identity since 1947.

Last week, President Uhuru Kenyatta adopted the community as Kenya’s 43rd tribe and apologized on behalf of past regime who denied them identity cards.

He ordered that they be issued with Identity Cards by December this year.

On Thursday, the community was given chance to perform silemba dance during the Mashujaa Day celebrations.
