Nigeria: INEC To Hold Edo State Governorship Election Despite Police Warning

INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may not postpone Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State, as earlier advised by security agencies, reports Channels TV.

The decision to go ahead with the election was taken Thursday morning after a meeting with stakeholders and consideration of the security report.

The commission will later in the day release a formal statement to confirm that the election will hold as scheduled.

The Nigeria Police and Department of State Services (DSS) had on Wednesday advised INEC to postpone the election.

The two security agencies said the advise was based on credible intelligence at its disposal, which suggests that insurgents are planning to attack vulnerable communities and soft targets, with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between 12th and 13th September.
