A new study shows that there are about 680,000 guns in circulation in Kenya, most of which are in wrong hands.

Sidney-based GunPolicy.org indicates that Kenya ranks at number 61 in private gun ownership, with 5 000 registered firearm holders.

Out of the 680,000 guns in civilian hands, only 1107 rifles, 2 200 shortguns and 1 871 handguns are registered.

This means that more than 600,000 guns are in wrong hands.

Illegal guns have been blamed for a spate of criminal activities in the country, especially among pastoralists who use such weapons in cattle rustling.

The government has organised regular disarmament exercises, with reportsconfirming that more than 5 000 illegal firearms have been recovered since 2011.

Firearms Licensing Board is responsible for the registration and regulation of gun use and anyone guilty of illegal possession of firearms is liable to jail term of not less than seven years and not more than 15 years.
