The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained reasons for its decision to issue a Certificate of Return to Uche Ogah who came second at the last Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries in Abia State, reports Vanguard.
The commission on Thursday issued the certificate to Ogah as the newly elected governor of Abia State.
INEC National Commissioner in charge of the South East, Lawrence Nwuruku said the commission obeyed the lawful order of a court.
A Federal High court in Abuja had on Monday asked INEC to cede the Certificate of Return issued to Okezie Ikpeazu to Ogah, who was his opponent in the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary.
Giving his ruling, Justice Okon Abang, ordered INEC to immediately issue a certificate of return to Ogah, who polled the second highest number of votes in the primary, reports News 24.
Nwuruku stated that as a citizen, he could go to jail if he flouts a valid court order.
He said if a higher court orders a reversal of the action, INEC would not hesitate to obey.
