The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it would not monitor the proposed Edo State governorship primaries of the Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reports The Brief.
The commission faulted the proposed exercise, noting that it runs contrary of the Electoral Act and the schedule of the timetable for the governorship election
Sheriff had on Thursday inaugurate a committee for the conduct of another primary for the 2016 Edo State governorship election, reports News 24.
Sheriff had declared the primary conducted by Caretaker Committee of the party led by Ahmed Makarfi as illegal.
But, the commission on Sunday said Section 85 of the Electoral Act provides that any party that wishes to hold a convention or primaries shall serve the Commission a 21-day notice.
INEC’s Deputy Director Public Affairs at INEC, Nick Dazang, who made the position of the commission known, noted that timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Edo Governorship provides that primaries are to take place between June 2 and July 4.
He said with timetable, the Sheriff’s faction have fallen short of the requirement for a 21-day notice to INEC.
