Nigeria Won’t Prosper Until My Dad Is Recognized, Says MKO Abiola’s Son

The family of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, has reportedly called on the federal government to declare him the winner and pay presidential entitlements.

According to The Sun, the head of the family, Muritala Abiola, made the request on Sunday, during the commemoration of the June 12 election.

“First, we want the federal government to declare June 12 as democracy day… MKO was killed because of an election he won. Maybe it is you journalists or the Nigerian government calling him acclaimed winner.

“He is not acclaimed winner, they should confirm him as slain president of Nigeria. MKO should be declared president. Although slain, all the entitlements belong to the family,” Muritala was quoted as saying.

A Punch report quoted MKO’s son, Jamiu as saying that the federal government had a responsibility to recognize his late father as a president, although he was never allowed to rule.

“This country will not prosper unless my father – the president – is recognized as a president of this country,” he said.
