There is tension in Kibera after reports surfaced that three protesters had died in anti IEBC protests.
Residents that spoke to News24 stated their displeasure at Police using too much force to dent protestations over the ongoing demonstrations that seek to have the IEBC removed from office.
” The use of excessive force is unfortunate as it is taking lives,” Alvin Okungu told News24.
There were reports that in Kisumu, a man who was not a part of the protests was killed by a stray Police bullet.
Police have increased patrols and presence in the slum in-order to ensure there is order.
” We have presence in all areas of the city,” Nairobi Police boss Benson Kibue told News24.
Kibue stated that CORD supporters had made it impossible to keep the peace and some of their behaviour had forced Police into using teargas and their guns at times.
” If the lives of Police officers are in danger then they have to react. It is simple. If there is a peaceful demonstration then there will be no need for force and that is the reality,” he said.
The protests are ongoing as opposition supporters seek to have the IEBC disbanded as they say that the 2017 General Elections will not be free and fair under the watch of the current regime.
