President Uhuru Kenyatta has threatened to withdraw Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) troops from Somalia.
The President cited fund cuts by European donors as the reason behind the decision, Daily Nation reports, saying that participating countries cannot fill the financial gaps left.
This comes as a surprise as the government has persistently dismissed calls by the opposition leaders to recall the troops and protect its citizens from retaliatory attacks by Al Shabaab.
KDF moved into Somalia in 2011 to flush out Al Shabaab insurgents who had been conducted several kidnappings in the country, a move that has seen the country suffer a spate of retaliatory attacks from the al-Qaeda linked terror group.
Citizens living along the Lamu and Wajir borders have borne the brunt of the attacks, though mass murders have been conducted in other parts of the country with the worst being the Westgate siege in 2013.
In January this year, they raided a KDF camp at El Adde in Somalia and killed over 200 soldiers.
