PDP National Chairman Sheriff Emerges Sole Candidate For PDP Chairman Seat

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is sure of retianing is position as he has emerged as the sole candidate for the seat in the May 21 National Convention of the party, reports The Nation.

The various party organs and stakeholders who were hitherto calling for his ouster on Monday gave him the nod to run as sole chairmanship candidate at the national convention billed to hold in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Recalled that Sheriff and PDP Concerned Stakeholders Forum, led by Prof. Jerry Gana, were at logger heads over Sheriff’s candidacy, zoning of the party’s chairmanship position to the North-east, postponement of the national convention and  amendment of the party’s constitution.

Leadership reports that both camps were forced to reach a compromise after series of consultations which culminated in the Monday’s meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees.

While Sheriff and the party’s 12 governors agreed to suspend the contentious amendment of the party’s constitution, the BoT, largely made up of Gana’s group shifted ground on their opposition to the holding of the National convention, the candidature of Sheriff for the position of National Chairman.

Sheriff also assured the BoT and other stakeholders that disagreements arising from the conduct of ward and zonal congresses across the states would be looked into with a view to addressing areas of conflict.
