A chief has been shot dead at his home by unknown gunmen at Ichuga village in Kieni East sub-county, Nyeri.
Martin Githinji, 43, who is a father of three, was shot several times on the neck and stomach and died on the spot, police said.
He was the assistant chief of Ichuga location.
Area chief, David Wamae said an unknown number of assailants awaited Githinji at his homestead where they shot him dead and stole his firearm.
Wamae noted that the administrator, who had spent the day at Wathituga primary school at a parents’ meeting was alone during the shooting.
He added that chiefs and their assistants are now worried as their security is not guaranteed.
Wamae said his camp has only two Administration Police officers, noting that whenever he is going for a raid or security crackdown, he goes with only one officer.
He said investigations have been launched to establish the motive of the killing, adding that the body was removed to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
Kieni MP, Kanini Kega visited the homestead and condoled with the family.
He termed the deceased as a hard working administrator who led in fight against sale and consumption of illicit brews.
Kega noted that dealers of the illicit liquor are very powerful and are retaliating following the crackdown and that they suspect the murder could be linked with the same.
The MP noted that the weapon that was used to kill the chief and the one he possessed could be used to cause more harm as he asked police to bring the assailants to book.
