Six people were arraigned in Vihiga Principal Magistrate court for being found in possession of chang’aa over the Easter holiday.

A total of 20 litres of chang’aa was brought to the court as exhibits, with the other offenders having been found drunk and disorderly.

Antony Evelia, who was arrested at Mbihi village with two litres of chang’aa told Vihiga Principal Magistrate Jacinta Orwa that he could not afford to buy beer that is expensive and thus resorted to taking chang’aa.

“The two litres I was arrested with was solely for my consumption purposes. It was not for selling,” he said in mitigation, where he was ordered to pay Sh4000 fine or face two-month jail term.

Rhoda Muhonja, who was arrested with 14 litres of chang’aa at Gavalagi village in Vihiga sub county was fined Sh20,000 or four-month jail term.

Muhonja said she was being forced to sell chang’aa because her husband is at the city and does not fend for the family.

Wycliffe Malenya and Martin Mwangi were both charged with being drunk and disorderly and were released on Sh500 fine.

John Ondari and Paul Mmbwanga pleaded not guilty for charges of having been found with two litres of chang’aa each. Their case has been set for hearing at a later date.
