Collapsed Building Kills Pregnant Woman And Daughter

The Oke-Ijeun community of Abeokuta has been left in mourning after the death of a pregnant woman and her child following the collapse of a dilapidated mud building in the area.

According to a Punch report, the woman, who was three months pregnant, was taking her children to school when the tragedy occurred.

The victim, Kafayat Somoye, was walking past the building when the collapse occurred, allegedly as a result of a downpour on Wednesday.

One of the woman’s children, Ganiyu, managed to escape the disaster but the woman and her other child were left trapped underneath the rubble.

It was gathered that Somoye was initially rescued while gasping for air but later died while being rushed to a nearby hospital.

An eyewitness on the scene, Kabirat Sonde, alleges that she barely escaped disaster as she was also taking her child to school along the same route.

“I was also taking my child to school. I was behind them and a woman was at the front. The woman was the person that raised the alarm immediately the incident happened.

“The mother (Somoye) was rescued alive, but as she was being rushed to the hospital, she gave up. People did not know immediately that there was a girl trapped under the rubble, it was the same woman in my front that alerted everybody to that fact,” she said.

The bodies of the deceased have since been released to their relatives for burial.
