A man in Malawi has protested a 15-month sentence handed down to an accused who exhumed the corpse of his albino brother,Malawi24 has reported.
Moffat Ziligone vowed to appeal the sentence handed down to the man at the Kukasenje court in Ntcheu, saying such lenient judgments contributed to the rise in albino killings and abductions across the country.
The distraught man also expressed concerns over the well being of his brother’s three children, all of whom were living with albinism.
According to Ziligone, the children were at risk of being attacked, as the accomplices who helped the convict exhume his brother’s body were still at large.
The president of the Association of People with Albinism in Malawi (APAM), Boniface Massa, also slammed the judgment, saying such sentences led to a growing fear among people living with the condition.
A recent News24 report revealed a resurgence of albino killings in the southern African country, with APAM expressing shock and concern over the development.
The organisation said a rise in the attacks on those living with albinism had been noted in the past three months.
Atrocities against albino citizens in Malawi have continued due to a belief that their body parts and bones contain magical properties, selling for large amounts on the black market.
