Egypt Freezes Assets Of Top Journalist, Rights Advocate

An Egyptian judicial commission has ordered that assets of four people be frozen, including those of a most prominent investigative journalists and a top rights’ advocate.

Egypt’s state-news agency Mena reported on Thursday that Cairo Criminal Court will review the commission’s decision on Saturday. It added that Hossam Bahgat, Gamal Eid and two others who weren’t identified are being investigated for illegally receiving $1.5m from foreign parties.

The commission’s decision came as a surprise to Hossam Bahgat, whose investigative pieces have exposed Egypt’s political corruption and an alleged foiled coup plot inside the military.

Bahgat along with Gamal Eid, the head of Arabic Network for Human Rights Information, said that they weren’t notified of the confiscation of their assets and only learned about it from the media
