Five pupils died and two others seriously injured Tuesday evening after being hit by a car at Awasi black spot along the Kisumu-Kericho highway.
The car is said to have been avoiding head-on collision with another vehicle when it veered off the road, hitting the school children.
Five of them died on the spot but two escaped with injuries and were rushed to Jaramogi Odinga Odinga Referral Hospital in Kisumu for treatment.
Standard reports that the children were walking home from school on the pedestrian pathway, 15 meters from the highway when the accident occurred.
One of the deceased children had been sick for two weeks and had just reported back to school when she met her death.
According to The Star, all the children were in nursery school.
