DP William Ruto’s admission of guilt in Kericho was the reason Jubilee won the by election, it has emerged.
Ruto had been put on the spot in the last month by supporters in his Rift Valley backyard for not being up to task as concerns the government’s development record in the region.
The drift, it is understood was so big that KANU, which fielded Paul Sang for the election were totally confident that they would ace the election.
Jubilee had fielded Aaron Cheruiyot who had been met with stiff opposition.
That said, they had not expected Ruto’s apology.
” I apologize. We have let you down. We are sorry. I am sorry,” Ruto told Kericho residents.
It swayed perception of the DP and the Jubilee Coalition in an instant.
” It was very hostile in the region when campaigns started. It was very tough. It was bad. We were told bad things,” a Jubilee campaign strategist for Kericho told News24.
” We told the DP he had to come down and speak to the people. When he apologized, things changed,” the source added.
The DP campaigned feverishly in Kericho after the apology and his apology coupled with the fact that he is still a popular figure, swayed the poll in the end, Jubilee’s way.
