Traditional Leaders Partner Delta To Fight Crime

Abuja – The Delta State Traditional Rulers’ Council has resolved to employ the services of community vigilante groups to check the menace of Fulani herdsmen and other security challenges.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa disclosed the move after a meeting with the traditional rulers in Asaba.

“We have had meaningful discussions with our traditional rulers, principally, members of the traditional rulers council,” Okowa said.

“I must truly thank our traditional rulers for the various suggestions that have been made to tackle security challenges facing the state,” Okowa said.

The governor said it was agreed there was need for a neighbourhood watch through vigilante groups.

“Traditional rulers should pay more attention than before to the reconstitution of vigilante groups in their various communities.”

He said there was a need to work out a means of empowering these vigilante groups to perform more creditably.

Okowa mentioned a need for the vigilante groups to be registered with the police.

The meeting with traditional leaders comes amid kidnapping being a thorny issue.

Kidnappers recently killed a traditional ruler while another who was kidnapped has been released.
