Nairobi Taxi operators have given the government seven days to kick Uber taxi service out of Nairobi, failure of which they will paralyse transport.
The Star reported operators under the Kenya United Taxi Organisation stated that they knew nothing about the alleged attacks on Uber drivers, saying they were peacefully conducting genuine business.
“It is they who have been attacking us while trying to get us out of business,” their leader Mwangi Mubia told a press conference on Wednesday as quoted in the report.
“We will block roads if Uber is not done away with in a week’s time. We have told our members to park their vehicles at strategic locations and all over town.”
Mubia added that they will soon roll out a digital platform for the benefit of customers.
The Daily Nation reported that the demonstration will be held despite the government warning taxi operators not to take the law into their hands.
Two people arrested on Tuesday for allegedly smashing an Uber taxi in Nairobi, amid a feud with regular cab drivers, are to appear in court on Thursday.
Regular taxi drivers are reportedly disgruntled over Uber’s cheap pricing model, which they argue is hurting business, and have been plotting to push the competition out of the city.
