Senate Summons Health Minister Of Nigeria Over Lassa Outbreak

– The Senate has invited Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, and other relevant health agencies to brief legislators on the outbreak of the Lassa fever.

The legislators, who nonetheless commended Adewole for measures taken so far over the outbreak of in some parts of the country, wish to get an update on initiatives further initiated to curb the  spread of the disease.

The senators also urged the Federal Government, health agencies and nongovernmental organisations to carry out holistic and aggressive awareness campaigns at markets, restaurants, neighbourhoods, communities, offices and schools  in states affected and unaffected states.

The legislators further urged the Federal Government to consider giving out rat killers free of charge to the citizenry to reduce or totally eradicate rats from our environment as the level of poverty in the land made it difficult for some to purchase rat killers.

At the plenary on Tuesday, legislators encouraged Nigerians to be conscious and adhere to rules of personal hygiene and put in more effort to get rid of rodents and rats.

Some 35 people have been reported dead in the last six weeks after an outbreak which has so far affected a number of states such as Bauchi, Edo, Kano, Oyo, Nassarawa, Niger, Rivers and Taraba.
