Cape Town – Two men were killed and 16 others injured in a collision on the R44 near Wellington on Tuesday morning.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring in a statement said paramedics as well as Metro EMS and Fire Services found two wrecked bakkies lying in the middle of the road when they arrived at the scene.

“A large truck that had been carrying farm workers had stopped a short distance away.

“On assessment, paramedics found two men lay trapped, one in each bakkie. Unfortunately both patients had already succumbed to their multiple fatal injuries. Their bodies were later removed by fire services using the jaws-of-life equipment.”

The occupants of the truck were assessed and 16 were found to have sustained minor to moderate injuries.

“Paramedics treated the patients and thereafter transported [them] to various hospitals for urgent treatment,” he said.

“It is understood that both bakkies collided head-on after one of them collided with the side of the truck.”

Authorities were on scene to investigate.
