Spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said the police probe still had to identify the suspect and the motive for Tuesday’s shooting had not yet been determined.
“This is still under investigation,” he said.
Chaos erupted at midday on Tuesday when the gunman, wearing a Muslim woman’s black prayer dress, entered the station building and fired shots, sending commuters running for cover.
Witnesses said the man tried to shoot himself three times, but it appeared the gun had jammed.
He then made his way to platform 24, where the final shot was fired.
“We have reason to believe that the man who shot and killed himself could have been part of a group of two men who acted suspiciously prior to the incident,” Van Wyk said.
The second suspect – still on the run – was also dressed in a black prayer dress.
Earlier, City of Cape Town safety and security mayoral committee member, JP Smith, said it appeared to have been an armed robbery gone wrong.
The City has handed over all CCTV footage to police in a bid to identify the second suspect.
