Johannesburg – Sindisiwe Manqele, accused of murdering Nkululeko “Flabba” Habedi on Thursday said she was not aware that he was married when she started a relationship with him when she was just 17-years-old.

“I found out in the newspapers [that he was married]. He had gone to the Sama’s [SA Music Awards] and they had written about him and his wife,” Manqele told the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Randburg.

This was several months after they had entered into a relationship.

Manqele said Habedi had assured her that his marriage was over and she believed him because she and Habedi had spent a lot of time together.

She did not know whether they had ever been legally married.

The now 26-year-old woman said they had an on and off relationship. It became serious in 2013 when they started conversing on Facebook while she was in Ireland.

She claimed that earlier this year, she found evidence of his infidelity on a phone he had loaned her.

Manqele said text messages indicated that Habedi had been sleeping with three other women.

“I was hurt. I was angry and upset,” Manqele said.

She said she was concerned that the rapper would infect her with a STI or HIV/Aids.

Prosecutor Paul Schutte, however, accused Manqele of fabricating her story.

He said he intended to argue that she had pursued Habedi and that she was the jealous lover, and not Habedi, as she had testified.

Manqele is on trial for Habedi’s murder after she fatally stabbed him at his home in Alexandra in March.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charge and says that she acted in self-defence.

She claimed the rapper had stabbed her and even spat in her face.
