Police are asking the community to report the whereabouts of a member of the infamous “Doorbell Gang” Derrick Williams from Eastwood.
A police source confirmed that Williams arrived at the Mountain Rise police station with his lawyer Martin Krog on Wednesday.
“When he heard that CAT (the police crime-fighting Combined Action Team) was searching for him, he went to his lawyer who accompanied him to the station,” said the police source.
Williams was wanted by CAT after allegedly evading arrest for months.
Police sources say Williams is accused of being part of the infamous “Five-Minute Doorbell Gang”, which robbed several homes in the Mountain Rise policing precinct in April, including that of DA MP Mergen Chetty.
It was reported that goods including jewellery, watches and foreign currency were stolen from the Chetty residence.
“Williams has avoided the law for months and a warrant of arrest had been issued for his arrest,” said police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane.
Williams was arrested immediately on presenting himself at the police station and was taken to the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court. He was remanded until his next court appearance on September 10 for a bail application.
More than eight cases implicating the Five-Minute Doorbell Gang have been reported at Mountain Rise police station. In April this year, three men and two women appeared briefly in court in connection with two housebreakings believed to be the work of the gang.
The accused were Thokozani Khanyile, 29, John Williams, 43, Mlindelwa Richard Dlamini, 43, Lorraine Williams, 30, and Ramitha Dhera, 44. All except Khanyile were later granted bail
