Court proceedings at Kerugoya High Court were disrupted after an inmate smeared police officers with feces.
Drama started when the inmate said he wanted to relieve himself at the court toilets.
Kennedy Murimi, who was also caught up in the melee told the media that the inmate started by removing the tiles from the floor before he scooped the feces with his hands.
Police officers who were on guard tried to prevent the inmate from tampering with the courtroom’s floor only to be smeared with the waste.
Murimi said attempts by the officers to handcuff the inmate were futile as they did not want to touch the waste which was allover his clothes.
He said it was his fellow inmates who finally overpowered him before the officers could handcuff him.
The drama attracted onlookers prompting the court orderlies to temporary stop all the proceedings in the other courts.
An officer who spoke to the media said the inmate had come for a mention of his case where he is accused of killing a prominent businessman in Kerugoya town.
The inmate was later bundled into a police vehicle and escorted back to prison.
He said he smeared the officers with the human waste to attract attention and secure his release claiming he was in remand for declining to answer to the greetings of somebody he could not name.
“I had informed other inmates at the prison facilities before we were brought to court this morning that I would smear the officers with the feces,” he said.
The court orderlies later sought services of fire engine personnel who came to clean the area before resumption of court proceedings while the officers went to change their uniforms.
