Late Polish president’s son-in-law held over fraud

The son-in-law of Poland’s late president, Lech Kaczynski, has been arrested in a case of the suspected embezzlement of some 13 million zlotys ($3.5m) from a state fund for handicapped people.

Lawyer Marcin Dubieniecki was to be questioned on Monday on suspicion of organising a crime ring, embezzlement and money-laundering.

Dubieniecki and four others were arrested Sunday, according to prosecutor Piotr Kosmaty.

Dubieniecki is married to Marta Kaczynska, the only daughter of Lech Kaczynski and former first lady Maria Kaczynska, who died in presidential plane crash in 2010. Her uncle is the late president’s twin brother, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the head of the opposition conservative Law and Justice party that is favored in October 25 general election.

Kaczynska and Dubieniecki are in the process of a divorce.
