South Africa: 2 die in Gauteng collision

Johannesburg – Two men were killed and a third was critically injured on Friday afternoon when two bakkies collided head-on on the R550, east of Johannesburg, paramedics said.

“ER24 paramedics, along with provincial services, arrived on the scene and found the two wrecked vehicles in the middle of the road,” ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

“On assessment, paramedics found the lifeless body of one of the drivers lying inside his vehicle. Unfortunately the driver had already succumbed to his multiple, fatal injuries.”

The passenger inside the bakkie was found trapped inside in a critical condition. Rescue services had to use the Jaws-of-Life in a 45-minute operation to free the passenger.

“Once freed, paramedics treated and provided the patient with advanced life support interventions,” he said.

“Unfortunately, after some time, the patient finally succumbed to multiple injuries.”

The driver of the second bakkie was found lying inside the vehicle in a critical condition.

Paramedics retrieved him from the bakkie.

“Once treated, the patient was airlifted by a medical helicopter to a private hospital for urgent treatment,” Meiring said.

“The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigation.”
