Durban – A high-impact collision north of Durban on Friday left two people dead and a third critically injured.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said the head-on collision on the R102 near Newark saw one of the cars veer sharply from the road and come to rest in a thicket.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the mangled wreckage of one of the cars lying in the middle of the road with debris surrounding it. On assessment it was discovered that the man who was driving the car had sustained fatal injuries and had sadly died prior to our arrival.

“A woman passenger was fighting for her life and medics immediately initiated care,” he said.

“The driver of the other vehicle, a woman, had also sustained severe injuries and was declared dead at the scene. Her body was heavily entrapped in the wreckage of the car and the Mandeni Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic rescue equipment to free it,” Herbst added.

“Advanced life support paramedics worked to stabilise the injured woman at the roadside before being rushed to hospital for further urgent care.”

He said that the road had to be closed while emergency service personnel cleared the scene.
