The tragic drama of South Africa’s xenophobic attacks in photos

Five people have been killed over the past two weeks since local vigilantes in South Africa started looting and attacking shops owned by immigrants mainly from other parts of Africa

In Johannesburg, Malawian immigrant Samuel Idrssa described how his friend was stabbed and set on fire by a mob.

‘We wanted to rescue him but there were too many of them,’ he said. ‘It was shocking.’

‘We have all left our homes. Those affected are those of us who live in poor townships because we live with poor South Africans who do not have jobs.’

Violence flared days after Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini said in remarks that foreigners should ‘take their bags and go’. And pictures below capture the horror of what’s currently happening in the country.

  1. This is horrible. It reminds me of the looting that takes place in the African American communities when they feel they are wronged. They destroy each other and their own people businesses. Only thing they don’t do is kill each . So it seems like a mirror image. In America we call it black on black crime. America is truly a land where every man can succeed if you take advantage of the opportunity. The poor in America are given food, shelter, clothing, schooling if you take advantage of it you could be a millionaire in a few short years. No matter what color you are. BUT YOU WILL NEVER BE ALLOWED TO LOT AND KILL WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES.
