The Presidency has denied claims that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s trip to India was cancelled over fears that the embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki would become acting President of the country.
The statement follows shortly after reports surfaced insinuating that Osinbajo’s trip was cancelled upon the discovery that President Muhammadu Buhari would be out of the country at the same time, Punch has reported.
In addition, many speculated that the decision was taken in order to ensure that Senate President Bukola Saraki did not emerge as acting President in the absence of Buhari and Osinbajo.
A source in the Presidency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, has since rubbished the claims, stating that it is an unwritten rule that both the President and Vice President could not be out of the country at the same time.
Senior Special Assistant to the Vice-President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, has also made comment on the issue, stating that there was no truth in reports that Osinbajo’s India trip had been cancelled.
“Whenever the Vice-President is to travel out of the country, we inform Nigerians. So, this story in question is a bunch of speculation. There is no cancellation,” Akande stated.
