Kenyans have trooped to social media sites to castigate the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) for paying local artistes peanuts in royalties.
The social media rage against MCSK began after rapper Khaligraph Jones shared a screenshot of an M-Pesa message confirming he had received only KSh 2,530 as payment for his annual royalties.

More artistes joined the conversation and opened up about similar frustrations the MCSK has subjected them throughout their career.
Among musicians who weighed in on the matter included King Kaka and Woman in Love hit maker, Vivian, who both claimed to have received KSh 2,500.
Netizens questioned the criteria used by MCSK to allocate artistes their respective royalties after it emerged most were receiving a flat rate of KSh 2,500, including those who last released a song close to a decade ago.
So how exactly do Kenyan musicians make money if MCSK can send @KHALIGRAPH Ks 2,500, same amount as @GidiOgidi who stopped singing close to a decade ago?

Khaligraph and King Kaka are among top artistes in the country who are enjoying a flourishing entertainment career with a huge fan base across the border.
For them to receive an average of KSh 2,500 speaks volumes about the frustrations other musicians face in terms of royalties.
