Single men in Somaliland have come out in protest against exorbitant dowry prices they say are imposed on them by the brides’ families.
The mostly young Somali men held signs declaring they are still single because of the high costs of getting married. They held the protest at a prominent hotel in Hargeisa.
According to some estimates, bride prices often escalate to as much as a million Kenya shillings despite a recommendation by religious leaders to keep them in the region of N152k.
They say they are likely to remain bachelors for a long time
A Somaliland news outlet shared their pictures online. Many online commenters supported their protest and agreed with them that the dowries are indeed inflated.
However, some disagreed and insisted that the brides and their families are special and deserve every bit of the dowry.
