Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned that it is not the job of current President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in clashes between herdsmen and farmers, Punch reports.
Speaking during the 23rd Annual LAPO Development Forum, Obasanjo revealed that he often finds himself angered when citizens blamed Buhari for not making commentary regarding herdsmen, which he notes is not a national issue but belongs at state and local government level.
“Now because the President of Nigeria is a Fulani man, then you would expect him to jump up and say this one is condemned and all that, no. That is not his job. And when people make comments like this, it annoys me. They say the President hasn’t said anything about this, that he used to be the patron of something…, but I believe that the ranching thing failed because the states and the local governments failed to do what they ought to have done,” said Obasanjo.
Obasanjo stated that some grazing zones in parts of the North had been reserved during the colonial era but wondered what had happens to such reserves since that time.
In addition, the former President wondered how herdsmen were able to arm themselves with sophisticated weaponry, stating that it is not necessary to address the issue at the level of the National Assembly, Daily Post reports.
