Doctors have reportedly ordered former Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki to stay in South Africa for a week after he was discharged from hospital following surgery.
Kibaki underwent surgery more than a week ago at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, to remove a blood clot in a vein in his neck.
According to family sources, doctors advised the former leader to take a bed rest for one week in South Africa before returning home.
“He has been released from hospital but has been told to stay in South Africa and take bed rest until he is fit to travel back to Kenya,” the source told News24.
A Daily Nation report quoted his family as saying he was in “jovial and high spirits”.
Kibaki served as Kenya’s president for two five-year terms, from 2002 to 2013, before he was succeeded by the incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta.
The 84-year-old lost his wife Lucy Kibaki in April this year.
