The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Athol Trollip has been elected the Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro unopposed.
This comes after the party reached an agreement with the United Democratic Movement, Congress of the People and the African Christian Democratic Party to form a multi-party coalition.
The Metro has a hung council because no party obtained an outright majority in the recent local government elections.
Earlier, the African National Congress (ANC) threatened to go to court if the council meeting was not stopped. The party says the allocation of seats is flawed.
Meanwhile, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the DA are on Thursday set to hold media briefings on co-governance agreements in KwaZulu-Natal municipalities.
The new Mtubatuba council on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast will be inaugurated on Thursday. The troubled municipality again failed to produce an outright winner in the recent local government elections.
The ANC and the IFP are neck-and-neck with 18 seats apiece while the DA has two seats. Both the Economic Freedom Fighters and the African Independent Congress have one seat each.
On Wednesday, EFF leader Julius Malema announced that his party would vote with the IFP in KwaZulu-Natal.
