At least 120 Malawians have actually been deported from South Africa after being detained at the Lindela Immigration Removal Centre in Krugersdorp for staying in the country unlawfully, Nyasa Times reported.
According to Dedza James Tambulasi, public relations officer for the Malawian immigration department, the immigrants had arrived safely through the Dedza Post on April 17.
Tambulasi also revealed that 900 more detainees were still awaiting their repatriation.
The development came just two weeks after ameeting was held between top officials from both Malawi and South Africa to discuss the detention of Malawian refugees in Lindela.
According to Malawi’s former minister of foreign affairs, George Chaponda, the two countries had agreed to meet again within the next three months to map a way forward.
“We have agreed that officials from Home Affairs, Immigration and Foreign Affairs of the two countries should meet within three months to discuss how best South Africa can stop the continued detention of Malawians,” Chaponda was quoted as saying.
