University of Nairobi (UoN) students have been warned against violent protests over the students’ union elections that were held last week Friday.
A statement from UoN Vice-Chancellor, Peter Mbithi cautioned the students against engaging in acts of lawlessness, saying those found culpable will be held responsible.
“The university would like to caution students against acts of lawlessness. Students or persons engaging in criminal acts shall be held individually responsible for their actions,” Mbithi said in a statement on Monday.
His statement came hours after a section of students engaged police in running battles in protest against the re-election of Babu Owino as the chairman of SONU.
Mbithi urged those refuting the election results to file petitions with the university’s electoral body instead of engaging in violent protests that saw the union’s office reduced to ashes on Monday.
“The university would like to encourage the contestants who are dissatisfied with the outcome of the just concluded SONU elections to file their petitions before the Independent Electoral Petitions Panel, 2016 on or before Wednesday, April 6, 2016 by 5.00 p.m. as provided for in the SONU Constitution,” Mbithi said.
He further assured the general public that the prevailing situation is generally peaceful and calm in all the campuses except the Main Campus where a few isolated incidents have occurred and that all academic programmes continue to run normally.
He said all the 14 students who suffered injuries during the Saturday stampede were treated for soft tissue injuries and discharged.
