About 28 counties have reported cases of cholera in the last one year due to failure by the devolved governments to prioritize public health matters, Director of Health, Kepha Ombacho has said.
Ombacho urged County Governments to prioritize public healthcare in order to avert unnecessary suffering and deaths from communicable diseases such as cholera.
Since last year, 216 people have been killed by cholera and 13000 other hospitalized across the country, according to Ombacho.
Ombacho said majority of counties have not been up to their task in terms of quality health care provision, giving rise to communicable diseases in many parts of the country.
The officer who spoke to journalists in Nyeri town challenged counties to invest more in building human resource capacity and prioritize issues of preventive healthcare to reverse this trend.
He warned that if counties fail to live up to the challenge of managing health care, the situation is set to get out of hand, now that public health is a devolved function.
“Counties that want to grow must be sensitive to the needs of their people in order to build a healthy and productive populace,” said the officer
