The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports of a purported tension within the party over alleged secret zoning of national offices.
PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) after its 69th meeting last Monday, mandated the National Working Committee (NWC) to set up a committee to decide on zoning of national offices for the May 21 National Convention.
There were, however, reports of alleged tension in the party over secret zoning of national offices by some leaders of the party.
But PDP in a statement by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, dismissed as baseless and untrue the report of purported tension within the party over alleged secret zoning of national offices of the party by some leaders of the party.
This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to Ekweremadu on Media, Uche Anichukwu.
According to Ekweremadu, “There is, so far, no meeting, secret or open, where all or a few PDP party leaders met to zone the National Working Committee, NWC, offices of the party. The PDP’s constitution is clear on how the party can arrive at a zoning formula.
“Besides, it should be clear to all that the days of any form of impunity and underhandedness within Africa’s biggest party are gone. We are committed to returning fully to the founding principles and philosophies of the PDP.
“Therefore, there can never be any secret zoning of PDP’s NWC positions or any other office for that matter. Such exists only in propaganda rooms and imaginations of those who are afraid that we are steadily reinforcing, reforming, and coming back stronger to give the nation a more purposeful leadership”.
While urging Nigerians to disregard the report, the Deputy Senate President stated that “the PDP will soon convene a meeting of the relevant stakeholders and organs of the party as stipulated by our constitution to come up with a clear zoning of the national offices of the party in a transparent, democratic, and fair manner.”
