Durban – The police ministry will have to pay more than R1.2m in compensation to an Umhlanga car dealership after a luxury performance car, a Jaguar F Type, was written off in an accident caused by a police officer.
According to a report in The Mercury, judgment was handed down in favour of the dealership after the matter went to trial in the Durban High Court last week.
The newspaper reported that the car was being driven by a brand manager at the time of the accident in 2013.
A taxi rear-ended the Jaguar when it had to brake for a Mercedes-Benz, being driven by a policeman and his colleague, that suddenly stopped in front of it on the N3.
The policemen were on duty and on their way to a rugby championship in Margate. The taxi driver died in the accident.
The car was valued at R1.3m, but was sold for scrap for R112 000. Jaguar Umhlanga sued the minister of police for the difference.
Maserati nose dive
In September last year, a Maserati was found crashed and abandoned on the University of Cape Town’s Hiddingh Campus in the Cape Town CBD, News24 reported.
The white Maserati came to rest on its side, against a damaged outbuilding. The car’s windows were broken and the bonnet had lifted off.
According to eyewitnesses, the occupants ran away.
The base price for the Maserati Grand Turismo starts from R2.2m.
And also in 2013, another Jaguar owner crashed into a house in Centurion, causing extensive damage, News24 reported.
The driver of the Jaguar FX fled the scene of the accident. Police found an empty bottle of Jameson whisky and a crate of Amstel Lager in the back.
