Food Crisis: Malawi To Import 50 000 Tons Of Maize From Tanzania

Lilongwe – Malawi is set to import 50 000 tons of maize from Tanzania to avert hunger, following a drought that has affected 2.8 million people in the southern African nation, reports Nyasa Times.

The 50 000 tons of maize from Tanzania is reportedly going to be added to an already imported 30 000 tons from neighbouring Zambia.

Farming is the largest source of income in the country, with at least 80% of the country’s 15 million people depending on agriculture.

Malawi recently appealed for humanitarian aid following the looming food crisis.

Reports indicate that most countries in southern Africa have been the hardest hit by the El Nino induced drought.

The rainfall season has so far been the driest in the last 35 years a cross large parts of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana and Madagascar, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
