Nigeria: President Buhari Scraps Proposed Job Seekers’ Allowance

Abuja – President Muhammadu Buhari has scrapped payment of a N5,000 monthly allowance to job seekers in the country, despite the All Progressives Congress (APC) having made the promise to citizens during his 2015 presidential campaign.

The statement, which has drawn widespread criticism from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), comes in stark contrast to members of the ruling party having reiterated their promise during various occasions, saying that the allowance will be implement in the 2016 national budget which is currently being reviewed by the National Assembly.

According to a Punch report, the President made his utterances during an official visit to Saudi Arabia, where he revealed that his Government could not afford to implement the plan.

According to Buhari, the Federal Government plans to build infrastructure to deal with unemployment rather than compensating those on the search for jobs.
