Nigeria: Groups At War Over Supreme Court Verdicts

Abuja – The recent Supreme Court verdict into some contentious governorship polls has sparked a war of words between some pro-democracy organisations.

In recent days, the Supreme Court justices have come under fire from some sections with the Transition Monitoring Group reportedly describing the rulings on the Akwa Ibom and Rivers State polls as “clear cut attempts at legalising electoral robberies.”

The Movement for the Advancement of National Transformation (MANTRA) has censured TMG for the reaction.

“The words used by the body in describing the judgements and judges betray the fact that this has always been a group set up by desperate politicians to masquerade as independent election observers while doing the infamous bidding of their paymasters,” said Jude Ndukwe, MANTRA National Coordinator.

This is a veiled reference to the All Progressives Congress, which was challenging the poll outcomes.

“Coming just very few days after the national chairman of APC called for the probe of the Supreme Court Justices over the same issue, we do not need to look too far to know who the sponsors of the so-called ‘Transition Maligning Group’ are,” said Ndukwe.

Ndukwe further slammed the TMG for its reaction to the verdicts that retained the People’s Democratic Party governors in power in the said states.

“The statement by TMG smacks of recalcitrance coupled with excessive exuberance and political rascality taken too far,” said Ndukwe.

“These attempts by APC, their leaders and foot soldiers, to continue to intimidate, insult, disparage and calumniate our judiciary are absolutely unacceptable.”

Ndukwe expressed support of the country’s judiciary.

“No matter the level of political brigandage exhibited by insolent groups like the TMG, our courts shall continue to remain the last hope of the common man and the bastion of justice.

“We are most glad that the justices of the apex court are neither swayed by the archaic antics of groups like TMG nor are they going to ever succumb to their subtle threats.”
