Kenyan mom to hang for strangling her baby to death

Jackline Liyema Mukoto, from Kakamega County in Western Kenya, was found guilty of murdering Dorine Nanjala Mukoto in July 2013.

Her son Emmanuel, who testified in the case, said that his mother threw Dorine down, sat on her and twisted her neck.

Emmanuel said he immediately rushed to his grandmother, who then called the police, resulting in the Mutoko’s arrest.

Mukoto’s husband, Jarred, who also testified in the case, said he was tethering cows when the incident happened.

When he went back to the house, he did not find any weapon at the scene and his wife was laughing.

Mukoto told the court that she saw herself in heaven when the incident occurred, adding that she regained consciousness while at the police cells, according to a Standard Media report.

Jarred told court that they had been married for about ten years and that there had been no disputes between them.

Postmortem results indicated that Dorine died of asyphixia due to strangulation, according to the charge sheet.

While delivering her ruling, Judge Ruth Sitati said: “I find Jackline Liyema Mukoto guilty of the offence of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code. I convict her of the same.”
