A spokesperson for Muslim rebel leader Noureddine Adam said on Tuesday that the new state will be called the Republic of Logone. He said a copy of the declaration, signed on Monday, was given to the UN office in Kaga-Bandoro.
The transitional government denounced the declaration.
Adam’s statement says the country should be divided in a move to ensure peace. His call comes weeks before a national election is scheduled and two weeks after Pope Francis visited and called for reconciliation among the country’s Muslim and Christian militias.
Central African Republic has been highly volatile since early 2013.
