Miliband, president of the International Rescue Committee, kneeled to make eye contact with the children in a refugee camp in Maiduguri, the northeastern city that has 1 million residents and 2 million refugees, half of them children.
On a tour of camps Monday, Miliband told The Associated Press that many of the children have been orphaned by the six-year Islamic uprising that has killed 20 000.
When he asked one boy what he wished for, the child said he wants to go back home. He asked Miliband to help.
Nigeria’s military reports destroying dozens of camps of Boko Haram militants recently, but many areas remain unsafe.
