The National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) Chairman, John Mututho wants makers of illicit brews to be compelled to compensate families of victims who die from consumption of the illegal drinks.
According to Mututho, engaging the distillers in courts will be the only way to ensure that the families get justice for the loss of their loved ones.
“We are compiling information that will enable us initiate charges against the distillers because many of the victims used their brews without knowing that they were poisonous. That is a clear indication that the distillers should be blamed for the deaths,” Mututho said.
Speaking Sunday in Naivasha town the former Naivasha MP said that about 30,000 Kenyans have died since 2009 as a result of consuming second generation liquors.
He also urged families of those affected to report to the Authority as well as avail supportive documents showing that their kin died as a result of taking illicit brews.
Mututho also promised severe action against importers who mix imported spirits with methanol saying that they will be brought to book.
“The constitution states clearly that anyone whose activities harm another person should compensate the person or the person’s relatives,” he added.
