Durban – A high speed chase and a rapid exchange of gunfire preceded the arrest of two men who attacked police while on patrol in KwaMakhuta in KwaZulu-Natal in the early hours of Wednesday morning.The gun battle and pursuit came as members of the police’s Brighton Beach Task Team and KwaMakhutha SAPS approached a vehicle while on patrol.
Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the officers had spotted a car with five men in it.
“When the suspects spotted police they opened fire on and fled. Police chased the vehicle and returned fire,” Naicker said.
“The suspects lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a house. Three suspects fled the scene, whilst two were apprehended. A 9mm pistol and five cellphones were found in the suspects’ possession,” he added.
“A case of attempted murder and possession of [an] unlicensed firearm were opened at the KwaMakhutha police station.
“The suspects aged 18 and 24 are expected to appear in the Mbumbululu Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.”
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended the police officers for keeping their cool whilst pursuing the suspects
“It is obvious that these individuals were up to no good. Detectives will ensure that they are profiled to establish whether they are wanted for other crimes in the province. I am pleased that our police officers were not injured during the shoot-out,” she said.
